Welcoming Spring with whirlies and a marimba

As part of the Lane Cove Festival, LCYO held their concert, Spring Celebration, at the Conservatorium of Music on Sunday 8 September 2024. Also featured in the concert was the Willoughby Girls High School (WGHS) String Orchestra, with conductor Lucy East.

Our conductor, Mark Brown began the concert with Dvorak's Fifth Symphony, 4th movement.

Teppei Usami, our Scholar Conductor masterfully conducted Saint-Saens' Bacchanale from Samson & Delilah giving it the passion and energy it demands.

LCYO President, Lyndall McNally, as the compere provided background to the afternoon's repertoire.

The 'Harmonic Whirlies' added an ethereal sound to the piece, Ancient Forests Once Stood Here by Australian composer Sarah Hopkins.

Under the baton of conductor, Lucy East, the WGHS String Orchestra demonstrated fine ensemble skills playing a variety of works ranging from a 16th Century Morris dance by Susato to a jazz waltz by Shostakovich. A highlight was a movement from Concerto for Marimba and String Orchestra by Rosauro with stunning soloist Celine Yuen.

Mark Brown 'bookended' the concert with another Dvorak work showcasing two fine orchestras as they joined forces to present Slavonic Dance No. 8!
